What about "Mountain Climbing" and "Rappelling" for Rope, Chalk Bag, Carabiners?
+2
Level 16
Jun 6, 2017
Mountain Climbing or Mountaineering generally doesn't use chalk. It's a different kind of sport. There will never be a day where a mountaineer will have to use chalk for a grip, it wouldn't help at all.

just because its based in the states doesn't mean that everyone that uses it lives in the states. the kind of arrogance that is displayed by stating that 'a website based in the united states should use american terminology' is exactly what you yanks are always exemplified for and your not helping the problem. By having it so that american football is displayed and gridiron is accepted you are making it accessible to more people. sincerely, an Australian (where football is aussie rules)

Some people call field hockey plain 'hockey.' I do this because where I am from we do not play ice hockey as a 'mainstream' sport as it is in America, but we do play field hockey. Therefore, depending on where you are from it can be interpreted differently. I recognised it was ice hockey (which I also know is related to and similar to field hockey) but just typed 'hockey' and it was accepted so I don't see the problem. Wow, hockey doesn't look like a real word any more, ha, hockey. :P
+1
Level 77
Jun 22, 2017
I think there are far more people who refer to "hockey" and mean ice hockey than there are for field hockey. it's not just "mainstream" in america, obviously huge here in canada, but also large parts of europe. sweden, finland, russia, and the czechs all have national pride in their hockey teams. I don't know of a single country that has anywhere near that kind of interest in field hockey.

I'd suggest you do some more research...while ice hockey is played at pro level in north America and eastern Europe, Field hockey is played at pro and semi-pro level across Europe, Asia, Oceania and the Americas. Numbers of players of field hockey in India and Pakistan together would probably rival total world participation in ice hockey

You can add 'Africa' to that list of Hockey continents.112 nations play 'Field Hockey' it is the third most popular world sport:

1) Soccer. 3.3-3.5 Billion Fans. (Europe, Africa, Americas, etc)

2) Cricket 3-3.3 Billion Fans. (India,U.K,Pakistan,Asia,Australia,etc)

3) Field Hockey. 2-2.2 Bilion Fans. (Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia)

4) Tennis. Around 1 Billion Fans. (Europe, Americas, Asia)

5) Volleyball Around 900 Million Fans. (Asia, Erope, Americas, Australia)

the 'tee' completely through me off for the football one. all I could think of is that someone invented some sort of full-contact golf, or something. Saw the answer and my palm met my forehead. I totally forgot that the kicker uses a tee, and I watch two different leagues of the sport. :P

I played hockey so many year ago at school, in a field and we started with a 'bully off. which I understand is dropped now. My nephew plays Ice Hockey (on ice). I see that if you are involved in this sports arena on a day to day basis you would just say hockey.

We have just had the Football World Cup. with many countries participating. I never heard the Soccer World Cup mentioned anywhere. It is Football. the other game is American Football or whatever they want to call it.
