The concept of "tall" means looking only from a north-south perspective. I've done a Longest Countries quiz that looks at the greatest distance from one end of each country's mainland to the other, regardless of compass direction. There is also means less debate about how to calculate the distances.

It may be that Chile is not continuous land, broken by major inlets into Argentina, just a possibility.

Chile just looks so thin but Brazil is very large it's southern most point is with Uruguay and it' northern is Venezuela that is more than half of the continent.

Skukx, care to back that up with any evidence?

Malbaby, that's an interesting thought but I don't think it's quite true. The majority of the Chile-Argentina border runs along the Andes, so although there are some substantial inlets of the ocean, Chile has some contiguous mass going all the way south to the Strait of Magellan. Note that this is different than the Beagle Channel, which is south of the island of Tierra del Fuego (i.e., not included in this distance)

Going strictly by northernmost and southernmost mainland points:

Brazil 4°27'N to 33°45'S equals 38°12' lines of latitude.

Chile 17°30'S to 53°54'S equals 36°24' lines of latitude.

Much of the southern tip of Chile you see on a world map is islands, extending to about 55°59'S, which would give Chile the very slight win in a lines of latitude battle between the two, at 19' of latitude (19 nautical miles).

If we're going non-contiguous, Russia, the USA, Canada, and potentially even China beat them both.
