I tried plenty of things vaguely like Okeechobee, but couldn't figure it out.

Anybody else find it ironic that the University of Mississippi is in a city called Oxford? Oxford University in Oxfordshire England is often cited as the best university in the entire world, usually beating out Cambridge, Harvard, etc. And Mississippi consistently ranks 50th out of 50 states for education achievement in the US.

This is an old comment, so let's revisit Mississippi's education rankings.

They are actually doing really well!

In fact, their rankings have climbed so much it's been called the Mississippi Miracle.

In terms of reading, they've gone from near the bottom to the middle of the pack. But keep in mind that Mississippi is a poor state. When you adjust for demographics, they are actually the #2 state in the country, trailing only Massachusetts. New York and California, on the other hand, are near the bottom.

How did Mississippi do it? It was actual pretty easy. They mandated phonics and ended the practice of social promotion for children who couldn't read.

If Mississippi can do it, there is no excuse for other states not to follow suit. With exceptions for disability, every student should learn to read. Yet (outside of enlightened states like Mississippi) a poor education system is failing our kids.

So let's give credit where it's due. Kudos to Mississippi!

Not to nit pick but a quite a bit of the Ozarks spill into Oklahoma. A small piece of the plateau even extends into Kansas.
