I'm with geographygal. But I'm kicking myself over King of the Road. Why no Conway Twitty or Glen Campbell?!?! Shocked about Waylon Jennings' percent right.
Skynyrd is a rock band, not country. The only thing remotely close to country they did was a rock song about a Southern state. And Bette Midler? Are you kidding me??? She's probably only been to the country on vacations
I can sort of understand Skynyrd - they are Southern rock, but Bette Midler??? I like her a lot, but you probably couldn't find a singer who is less country unless you looked on Broadway or at the opera and I don't mean Opry. I just got a picture of Renata Tebaldi in cowboy boots and a fringed outfit stuck in my head. "The Divine Miss M" is not a WSM regular. I don't mean to be ugly, but it ain't the quiz that needs expanding.
Bette Midler? Would never in a million years consider her even remotely close to country-adjacent. Pretty much the equivalent of being disappointed with Michael Buble's non-inclusion in a gangster rap genre quiz.
Maybe if you listen to the lowest common denominator radio fodder. Check out Zach Bryan, Jason Isbell, Turnpike Troubadours, Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson, Townes Van Zandt, Jason Molina - some of the best songwriters of all time come from country music. A lot of the older stuff is fantastic, too, even of just the ones on this quiz Wichita Lineman, Jolene, and He Stopped Loving Her Today are near universally acclaimed as among the best written songs ever.
I'm a little bit surprised by the percentage of people having found Weylon Jennings and Merle Haggard. Those two are well known as some of the best ever.
No surprise there. She's an American treasure with broad appeal well beyond country music fans due to her charity work and just being a generous, open-hearted, loving person.
Not to nitpick but Waylon's version was released in 71 and although popular, the song didn't hit it big until he recorded it as a "live" song with Willie. I wonder is "Okie From Muskogee" would pull up Merle's numbers. That has to be his best known song especially to non country music people.
Country music is so, so much more that big green tractors
