I first heard it from a Puerto Rican at a conference in Miami, when we were talking about the Spanish-language broadcasting and television industry there and how it reached across the Caribbean. Maybe things like that?

Also, the Bahamas are much closer to Miami than 100 miles. Bimini is about 55 miles from Port Miami.
