I like the idea of discounting deferred contracts, but if you do that then it should be applied to all contracts. Many of these contracts are end-loaded with the highest annual salaries in years 8-10, so the net present value should still be less than Ohtani's deferred contract.

Good thought. This is just how MLB counts it for luxury tax purposes.
