Some possessions were federated or dissolved into smaller colonies, such as with most dominions. In these cases, each individual colony or protectorate throughout time must be named.

Some possessions were renamed - in these cases, the name which was used for the longest is shown. However, if this renaming came alongside significant territorial changes, then all given names must be individually listed.

The personal union with Hannover, Indian princely states, Chinese concessions, and military occupations are excluded.
