The flag represents New Zealand's ultimate goal of genetically engineering cyborg kiwi birds with which they plan to take over the world. Sadly their ham handed genetic meddling has only resulted in making the kiwi an endangered species.

I was so disappointed it didn't become the NZ flag. 43% of New Zealanders voted for it (including me) but not quite enough to get through.

Does anyone have an explanation for the K? Does it have something to do with the fact that in Greek, Cyprus begins with K (Kappa)? That's the only explanation I can think of.

The Nigerian one is actually great, a shame they didn't use it, their current flag is somewhat boring. I also like the Luxemburgish flag, it's very oldschool, which is fitting for a small European dukedom that survived two world wars.

Would have taken me forever to get Togo, they're using the Arabic colours with palm trees!

Togo used to be a German colony, and the colors come from the pre-Nazi German flag.

The "X" symbol on the Kyrgyzstan flag is taken from the interior of a tunduk tent (like a yurt). It's basically a sparse basket that goes in the top center, you connect the rafters to it, you drape the fabric over the assembly.

"The centre of the sun features a stylized illustration of the roof (tunduk) atop a traditional Kyrgyz tent (yurt) when viewed from the interior. Although these tents are less commonly used today,[3] its incorporation into the flag is meant to symbolize the "origin of life", the "unity of time and space", as well as the people's "hearth and home" and their history."

Ok, some of these are real missed opportunities, specifically:

-- almost anything bringing in a cool animal: South Africa, Togo, Australia, and the UK (but not laser kiwi and whatever is dancing across Luxembourg)

-- Montenegro: this is brighter and more modern than their current flag. Thumbs up.

-- Bolivia's rainbow pixel staircase

-- Nigeria's sun
