Who am I? Bacterial Pathogens

1. I am β-hemolytic, PYR (+), susceptible to penicillin and bacitracin sensitive.

2. I am β-hemolytic, CAMP(+), hippurase(+), the leading cause of neonatal sepsis and meningitis, and catalase(-).

3. I am oxidase(+), catalase(+), motile, opportunistic in burn patients and otitis externa and can display a metallic sheen on agar.

4. I am the leading bacterial cause of diarrhea, associated with Guillain-Barré syndrome, display darting motility and hippurate(+).

5. I am common normal flora in the upper respiratory tract, require both X & V factors to grow, and appear mucoid if encapsulated.

6. I am transmitted by unpasteurized dairy products and animal contact, referred to as a “stealth pathogen”, and display slow growth upon culture.

7. I am indole(-), H2S (+), Gelatinase (+), and often display swarming motility.

8. I am never normal flora, a clinical cause of dysentery, non-motile, and often travel-associated.

9. I am normal flora on the skin and mucous membranes, responsible for catheter-related bloodstream infections and am catalase(-).

10. I am rarely pathogenic, catalase(+), oxidase(+), and display a tetrad formation under a gram-stain.
