I always knew the Maldives to be red and green with a crescent in the middle. The image provided looks like a chain of islands on white background. Can anyone illuminate me?

the white is the ocean, the larger Maldive islands actually reflect the colours of the flag but being an island nation makes it hard to recognize

I was suddenly confused about Maldives at first, however, the islands are indeed (similar to an atoll) and the flag is actually included in the image, however, it's difficult to see since the country's shape is highly irregular.

Can someone please explain why the top and bottom portions of the Maldives are white in the middle? I understand the center part being white on white because of the white crescent.

The white portions represent the water area. There is no land, but ocean.

I'm.very disappointed that Jetpunk sides with Russia in recognizing the Taliban government in Afghanistan. According to Wikipedia, the tricolor flag is still in use at the UN,.at the Olympics, etc.

This is the official flag of Afghanistan. Wikipedia, the UN and the International Olympic Committee can not decide what will the flag of any country look like.
