Its just like how -land is used as a suffix for many European countries or regions. Both have the same meaning. Like England, Scotland, Ireland, Finland, Poland, Greenland, Iceland, Switzerland, Netherlands and even Deutchland.

If you know where Pakistan and Afghanistan are, you can get the rest by starting with Kazakhstan at the top and going in alphabetical order clockwise.

Apart from the obvious ones (Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Afghanistan) the stans are in alphabetical order looked at clockwise from Kazakhstan. 7/7 for me.
