What is defined as "big but becoming smaller?" You might as well add Sudan on here that became smaller when South Sudan became independent. Also Poland used to be bigger.

A country which used to be massive but has lost a considerable amount of land over time and now is tiny or medium size.

How has Russia become smaller? With the annexation of Crimea it only came bigger.

Russia used to be the Russian Empire and back then it most of eastern Europe, Alaska and nearly all of the "stan" countries.

My definition is that a country has lost a considerable amount of land over time. Like around 30%+ of its original size.
