It is technically a pasta. Orzo is confused with rice in the same manner.

These are only Italian. Chinese noodles are probably among the top types by volume too...

Very true. I was trying several Chinese and Japanese noodles and they weren't there. Though vermicelli works in both italian and vietnamese cooking.
