Is Washington, D.C. really a two word city? Isn't the D.C. just telling you where it is, like New York, New York or Kansas City, Missouri?

In short: from experience, I can tell you that anyone who is near there or lives there calls it Washington DC or, more likely, DC. This is to differentiate from the state :)
