Scotland has its own national song 'Flower of Scotland' and Wales has its own national anthem ' Mae hen wlad fy nhadau'. In Northern Ireland and England, "God Save the Queen" is still used as the official anthem.
It changes when a new monarch comes into power, e.g. when elizabeth II died and charles III came to the thrown it changed from god save the king to god save the queen
"God Save our gracious Monarch" doesn't quite fit the rhythm of the song, old chap.
Still, not the most stirring anthem, wot wot? One always plumps for "Land of Hope and Glory". Edward Elgar's finest, b'God!
You seem a good sort, old bean, so one will let you in on a little secret, all very hush-hush: when we English think we're alone, with no bally foreigners about to throw around terms like "irony", "damn gall", "hypocrisy" and such and such, we love nothing more than a jolly rousing rendition of "Rule Britannia!", exclamation mark and all!
Oh how our tea cups rattle!
Right-ho, loose lips sink ships, so be a good sport and remember: mum's the word.
yes but there are two official national anthems of the uk and two official languages. english and welsh, god save the queen and mae hen wlad fy nhadau.
No, the whole comprises the parts and the parts compose the whole. Example: the Union comprises 50 states and 50 states compose the Union (thank you, American Heritage dictionary). “Is comprised of” is a less preferred construction.
No, I reckon it's more like they don't think of England being a country within the UK because they think them both to be the same thing. I've had many an argument (Usually with Americans) where they've insisted that England is the same as the UK and I've had to correct them
Can you make "House of peers" and "The Right Honourable the Lords Spiritual and Temporal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Parliament assembled" acceptable for House of Lords?
I don't think anyone will type, "The Right Honourable the Lords Spiritual and Temporal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Parliament assembled" lol.
Both 'Land of Hope and Glory' and 'Rule Britannia' have extremely colonialist implications and probably aren't suitable to represent the country any more. Not that 'God Save the King' doesn't have its own issues, but still.
So you're telling me only 40% of people know the longest river in this country, and only 51% know the tallest mountain, yet..... 85% know that new prime minister's name!??
i had completely forgot what the national anthem was, but i know it started with god, then i remembered something but instead i put “god saved the queen” instead of “god saved the king”
I guess that could be accepted. But only if the quiz was flipped to accept wrong answers. But, of course, that would mean changing the answers for all the other questions as well.
england, scotland, wales, and northern ireland are not countries, mainly because they are not sovereign nations. rather, they would be considered states or provinces of the uk, which IS a country
No, that’s wrong. Each of them are individually considered countries. They are definitely not considered states or provinces. Don’t tell a Welsh or Scottish person that Wales and Scotland aren’t real countries!
I always mix up Ben Nevis mountain in the UK with Ben Lomond Mountain in Utah. Fun fact, Ben Lomond is the mountain that inspired the Paramount film studio logo. Has Ben Nevis done that? :)
I saw this American lady, looking at map of a "pin your place" (I pinned mine in North Korea)thing pretend to be smart. She was looking at a pin near Newcastle and said, "that must be London." She walked, basking in knowledge, though she did wonder why I was laughing on the ground, of course.I'm just lucky now thatjetounk has kept from making the mistake of misidentifying London
"Buckingham" shouldn't be an acceptable answer for the king's residene, as it's a completely separate town, 65 miles away from the palace, and isn't the residence of the king!

Everything is small there; even the largest non-human predator is tiny! (Badger. I do jest with these comments a bit.)
I love the idea to do a Country Trivia Quiz

Well, at least it doesn't have the name in it.

NI isn't a country. it's not even a province. It's part of a province.
So the UK isn't 4 countries. It's two kingdoms, one principality and a bit of a province.
