I think we're meant to guess from where they came from, and not the center of their power. Although Kazakhstan is sort of a guess since the best we can say is that they came from central Asia.
Not to be nationalistic or whatever but North Macedonia has nothing to do with ancient Macedon, despite the name. The heartland of ancient Macedon was the plains of the Haliacmon and the Axios rivers, where you'd find Pella, Aigai and Dion. Nowadays, all of those are in northern Greece.
I'm not saying that the ancient Macedonians were Greeks (or that they weren't), that's a whole other debate, but the heartland of their empire is in modern Greece.
