Yes, I think it's just a formality. Since all potential questions can be looked up online, preparing for the rest is easy. I am not really sure what's the point of these tests, it seems more like a language test in disguise. My wife passed it with 32/33, she just got the Alsace-Lorraine question wrong on purpose because she thought it was funny :D
Personally, I'd rather have them ask more questions about a person's world view than about history trivia - people can go to JetPunk for that. Of course I appreciate it if people are interested in the history and culture of my country, but tolerance for others and acceptance of universal basic human rights are much more important to keep the place (or any place) functioning.
Many questions are clearly more about the values of the state than the fine points of its constitution: the message of many of them is that Nazis are bad, and so are communists and Muslim fundamentalists.
(Which is great, BTW! I appreciate that Germany will only accept citizens who reject extremist ideologies).
So I got 20/30, does that mean that as long as I did as well as that on the citizenship test (and spoke German, I'm currently learning it) and got those same 30 questions, I could be a German citizen?
Yes! In the actual test, 17 correct answers are enough to pass. There are 3 extra questions specific to the state (Bundesland, e.g. Bavaria) you apply in, so in total there would be 33 questions, but 20/33 would still be enough.
You may if you also live in Germany for more than 5 years, have a stable source of income, no criminal record and pass a level B1 language exam by correctly pronouncing Streichholzschächtelchen.
