The 'colour-blind'
This term is used to describe teachers who believe all pupils are equal but in practice allow racism to go unchallenged. This term was coined by Heidi Mirza.
The 'overt racists'
This term is used to describe teachers who believe Black pupils are inferior and actively discriminate against them. This term was coined by Heidi Mirza.
Labelling theory
This term is used to describe the process of attaching a meaning or definition to someone. In terms of ethnicity, interactionists focus on the different types of these that teachers give to children from different ethnic backgrounds.
Model Minorities
This term is used to describe minority ethnic groups, such as Chinese and Indian pupils, who achieve above average results. David Gillborn argues that the achievements of model minorities are wrongly used to justify the claim that the education system cannot be institutionally racist.
'demonised' pupil identity
This term is used to describe a White or Black, working-class, hypersexualised identity. Teachers see this pupil as an unintelligent, peer-led, culturally deprived, under-achiever.
