This is interesting not in the least for how the American electorate evolved over the 20th century. I was curious about Teddy Roosevelt, a larger than life figure in American history, so I did some research and over the 2 elections he ran in, he won a little under 12 million votes. Which means someone like Walter Mondale, who's infamous for running one of the weakest campaigns ever and winning only 1 state, still won 3 times the number of votes Teddy did and in a single election at that. There's probably a lot going on here: immigration, women's suffrage, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the Baby Boom. But it really tells the story of 20th century America.
When Mondale lost in 1984 the US population had about tripled since 1904 when TR won as incumbent, but even in his loss, Mondale won a much higher percentage of the total population than did TR, so it does point to how the scope of voting rights and political involvement broadened significantly in those 80 years.
I don't feel like making it, but it would be fun to have a similar quiz, but with most votes as a percentage of the total population. This one obviously favors recent candidates due to the larger total US population.
My guess is that it would still favor recent candidates (although maybe less recent than this quiz) because of expanded voting rights in the 20th century. If significantly more people can vote, even if turnout is relatively low, candidates will still end up with larger percentages of the total population.
I find it interesting how population growth accentuates the results of this quiz. Initially, I was certain William Jennings Bryan would appear, since he was the Democratic nominee 3 times. However, totaling his 1896, 1900, and 1908 campaigns gets him only about 19 million votes.
Interestingly, he still would be in #1 without the 2024 election (137m votes), but I guess that's because there are generally more people voting as the years go on
True, though one more election cycle and he'll be off I imagine, unless we get a rematch between two other people on the list....(not going to happen).
And I'm sure there already is one somewhere lol
