I do (occasionally) try to make quizzes easier, but can definitely forget that sudden death makes potential wrong answers much more punishing haha

It's the 2nd least guessed country on COTW, by that definition Sao Tome is the only obscure country haha. Especially in sudden death it'd be (or, was) much more punishing

I believe Kiribati has islands that are both North and South of the equator but no island crosses the equator

Short answer, no, long answer, it would need someone smarter than me because there's no way to randomly sort only above or below the equator, or for the quiz to know which side of the equator each country would be on

Think of the quiz like the planet. The equator is in the center. You have to click all the countries that are in the correct location relative to the equator, for instance, New Zealand is south of the equator, and is south of the EQUATOR bubble on this quiz, therefore it's a correct answer.
