Such as humanity's closest relative...
This one's pretty easy.
For each letter of the alphabet, name the southernmost country that starts with that letter.
Start by naming any country that France borders. Then name any country that borders any of those countries. Then keep going until there are no more countries left to name.

I added the caveats. I think the quizmaker did a GREAT job with type-ins, but it's impossible to be completely comprehensive. There are over 10,000 bird species alone.

Please don't make comments about missing animals unless they are truly basic. Otherwise, it just becomes exhausting. It's a fun challenge to succeed within the context of the quiz.

Thanks! I'm very surprised two people got X so far haha, the rest seem hard enough in a vacuum but I'd never heard of any of the Xs

I got 100% first try, but the pauses always help me a lot. I don't think I would have been able to get I, W, X, or Y without pauses.

Also, I think the only reason why I got X (even with the pauses) was because I remember playing computer games as a kid where they would name an animal for each letter. I feel like x-ray fish was named in one of those games. It took me a hot minute or two just to recall that from the inner reaches of my brain because I haven't accessed that memory in over 20 years lol

I knew I'd have heard of some "X-ray" animal a looong time back! I tried X-ray bird, but when it didn't work I was like "yea that was a dumb idea", and moved on

Yeah I got x-ray fish from remembering a wall chart with it on at school, 20+ years ago too.

After seeing the caveat I was expecting it to only be a very basic list but I was pleasantly surprised to see a lot of relatively obscure animals make the cut. Great job with this one!

The caveats are well noted but can I make a plea for xenops? There are so few beginning with x that this is one letter where being comprehensive would be appreciated - most of us probably only know one example!

Xenops was my first guess, and I was surprised it was not taken. I got X by typing X-ray fish. I have no idea what that is, but it was accepted.

Since U and X are so low, I figure obscure animals are welcome here to try and boost the numbers. The Utahraptor is the largest raptor and in the world of dinosaurs, is pretty well known. I would welcome it as a type-in.

I tried Venus Flytrap as a joke, and it accepted it. I really don't think it should be accepted though. Just because it eats animals, doesn't mean it IS an animal. From Wikipedia, "The Venus Flytrap is a carnivorous PLANT native to the temperate and subtropical wetlands..."

Looking at Wikipedia's disambiguation page, I assume "venus flytrap" is accepted because of the venus flytrap sea anemone.

I hesitate because of the caveat, but could I suggest xenopus (more as a type-in for X? I don't know if any X animal can really count as basic, but they're common throughout most of sub-Saharan Africa, are invasive species in a number of countries on other continents, are common in the pet trade, and are very commonly used as model organisms in scientific research.

Not sure if this is disqualified under breed/gender/child/etc. rulings, but I tried "hog" — which wasn't accepted, and I think it should be.

(Also, please don't let the flood of comments asking for more animals discourage you. This is a PHENOMENAL quiz! I've had somewhat similar ideas before, but always gave up quickly when I realized how long they would take. Kudos for seeing it through, barmanitan!)

Fun quiz, thanks. I'll probably be shot down for the following, but here goes. I know a lot about animals, especially about birds, but I knew when I started the quiz that I'd get 25/26, and not get the X. I also knew going in that "Xema" would probably not be accepted. It is obscure, but I daresay not as obscure as the three X animals listed in red. I say this because I used to read a children's book to my kids, entitled something like "ABC of Birds." For the letter X, they had Xema, which is the genus of Sabine's Gull. If it was featured in a reasonably popular children's book, it isn't all that obscure.

A xeme is actually the same thing, which Wiki gives as a name for it and xema just as the genus, but I'll accept both (if QM obliges haha)

You separate all the type-ins you want with "|" in the answers in step 2, then set the type-in to custom so you can change the answer to only have some of them so it looks neater. Here I used =textjoin in a spreadsheet so that I didn't have to separate them all manually

I think this is general enough to count - the unicornfishes are an entire genus (Naso) and would be very helpful as U is such a rarely gotten category
