Orthohantavirus (or hantavirus) normally infects rodents, but does not cause disease in them. Humans may become infected with hantaviruses through contact with rodent urine, saliva, or feces, leading to death in one third of cases. As of January 2017, 864 lab-confirmed cases of hantavirus disease have been reported since surveillance in the United States began in 1993.
