Be glad. Too many roads are terrible for wild animals and for people trying to get some peace and quiet away from traffic. Also, they take up a lot of space that is missing for agriculture, forestry or recreation.
Great quiz, really good idea. I did here a stat (unverified) that China's road building programme over the last 25 years has laid enough tarmac to entirely cover the UK
That suprised me a little bit, too, but come to think of it, with all the time I've spent in Thailand I've done almost no traveling by road, aside from the bus between Bangkok and Pattaya/Jomtien, and the shuttle between different areas around Phuket, mostly traveled by air, by sea, or by rail there.
I wonder to what extent we have the same levels of reporting and criteria of roadways for each jurisdiction. The key seems to be a) large geographic areas x b) dense settlement x c) adequate funds for some sort of infrastructural development. I find it hard to believe that Thailand occupies in reality the space it occupies on this list. Anecdotally, I lived in Thailand for a while and it never occurred to me that I was in the Asian Benelux of roadways.
I live in Italy and we're almost choked by the road network. Yet, we have almost three times less than Japan, a country of comparable size that has an even bigger railway system. I wonder if they have any free land zone over there.
A bit surprised at India being higher than China considering China is larger and has better infrastructure. Then again, China has very large remote regions in Tibet and Xinjiang where there's no reason to build vast road networks. Also, it seems that China is #1 in the length of its expressways, waaaaay ahead of India.
Brazil is the 4th, but it depends TOO MUCH on roads. Our train infrastructure is very bad and you barely see people doing intercity travels on trains. Thus, we have lots of deadly accidents on our roads.
The president who started this dependence was Juscelino Kubitschek, the same who built Brasília.
Agreed
But still, nice concept.

I find it hard to believe that Sask. has more roads than Ontario or Quebec
