• Five of these teams did not have the word “City” within their names at the time they joined the Football League.

• As of the 2025–26 season, two of these teams compete below the Football League, as does the phoenix club of another of the teams listed. One other team no longer exists, though its successor club is a present-day member of the 92.

• Two of the answers are clubs that are not based in England!

Leeds City has not existed for many, many years, the city's team has been Leeds United in living memory - I'm also not sure about Salford City, although I suspect it was an earlier incarnation of Manchester United.

That’s certainly true, with United being set up as a replacement club following City’s expulsion from the Football League in 1919, but this quiz covers all clubs to have played in the League since its formation in 1888, not just present members.

And Salford have played in League Two since they were promoted from the National League in 2019.

You suspect wrong re Salford City, Very wrong. They have links to United though - the Nevilles, Scholes, Beckham, Butt and Giggs have all been recent co-owners.

Today I learned Cardiff is English without protest from the Welsh.

Cardiff (as well as Swansea, Wrexham, Newport and Merthyr) play in the English football pyramid because there wasn't a Welsh one when they formed.

They were invited to switch to the Welsh pyramid in 1992 but declined since the standard is nowhere near the level of the English pyramid.
