Maybe count Third Reich for Nazi Germany and Byzantium/Eastern roman empire for byzantine empire

If Nazi Germany and the USSR are counted, shouldn't the US count as well? I see no other possible definition for empire that the US wouldn't fit, if being led by an monarch isn't a requirement.
