I though theseus was the son of poseidon

It's not really clear in most texts; some have it as Aegeus, some as Poseidon - I'll include that now

Replied to a comment above but it's not entirely clear in Greek texts if it's Poseidon or Aegeus, and yes he is eventually let go but the original intent was to chain him up forever for his crime of disobeying the gods
