surprised Florida is only 23,7%. I was there earlier last year and people appear to speak more Spanish there than English. Some people didn't even understand English at all!

If you visited Miami the hispanic population will be much higher than say, Jacksonville or some northern town.

The most obvious reason is that it was notably not part of Mexico pre-1848.

To be fair, the whole state was really crappy reservation land that Natives were unjustly forced onto in the middle of nowhere & was mainly settled by white Americans through the various Homestead Acts.

I had no idea about the figures, I just tried the states closest to the Mexican border and when I run out of those, I tried the states with the biggest cities - got all but one with this tactic.

It's such a forgettable state I feel. It's just Chicago and everything else. (For some reason, the fact that Chicago is in Illinois still feels off to me)
