The European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages is a European treaty adopted in 1992 to protect and promote historical regional and minority languages in Europe. Can you name all of the languages protected by this treaty?
The most interesting thing is that, as always in such agreements, the countries in which the language problem really matters have not signed it. Of the countries in which the linguistic minority is indeed an acute topic: it is being oppressed or losing popularity, there are only Spain, Ukraine and the United Kingdom, and because of the last two it seems that this is indeed a very useless charter! And, most hilariously, neither France, nor Turkey, nor Azerbaijan, nor Italy, nor the Baltics and Moldova are present here, although it is among them that these minorities are most disadvantaged. But Bosnia and Herzegovina has pledged to protect Ladin as a regional language!
Oh no, I didn't realise Sorbian was split into more than one language D: Also tried "Northern Sami" and "Southern Sami" but didn't get the more specific names.
Either way, happy to see Welsh on there! Cymru am byth ♥
