It would be interesting to use the coordinates of every corner of the squares and plot them on a globe to see if the closer to 50/50 squares would change.

Probably far too much work but just a thought...

These were calculated based on which are the most prominent color in the squares. There were a few close calls, but each was at least 51% in the end!

This is not the Mercator projection. This is the equirectangular projection that JetPunk uses which maintains relative areas

can't you just cut up a gall-peters or any rectangular equal-area projection into 40 chunks and do it that way?

i always find these Sudden Death ones interesting because we can necessarily see how many are remaining. i got all the correct answers here, but only because i knew how many i was looking for - if i hadn't been told, i might have gone "yeah that's all of them" much sooner
