Essentially the only countries that recognize Taiwan as a country are some that are quite small and poor (mostly Pacific island nations), making direct financial assistance from Taiwan more profitable than diplomatic and economic ties with China.

No, that's the only country to have a Liberian head of state.

I'm not aware of any country that has ever had a Librarian head of state!

Liberia is also the first country to have an Afro-American president. In fact, its ten first presidents were all US-born people of colour that ruled well before 1900 so it's not even close.

3 minutes left, 2 more to guess: ends with K and Libertarian hos. I started with the first one thinking it would be more obvious, somehow managed to go through the entire world within a minute, except Europe. Ok, lemme try, sometimes it's a very obvious answer. Some Yakko' World lyrics and there's DENMARK!

Last one remaining. I went through all the Nordics and countries I thought they could be liberal, didn't really know what libertarian meant even if I had heard about it. Then I decided - it must be in the Americas, since if nothing I thought could match matched, Asian and African countries would rather be conservative. I typed Argentina and then I started dancing with my arms for a bit.

I nearly had exactly the same must have been about 3 minutes and ow wait I had "somalia" and "libertarian" left. K did take a while but were not my last two. I nearly named all african countries (starting with the bordering ones but when that didn't seem to work..) when at 9 seconds I finally remembered there was one I had missed.. (somehow that happens more often with me with that one, I remember djibouti but forget all about eritrea). Never got Libertarian.

And lol@ dancing with your arms a bit

tbh I was shocked so few got the libertarian question, Milei has to be among the more prominent international leaders.

Maybe I'm a little biased because I love the guy.

Nice quiz. But for this one (and many others), I wish the questions/definitions were more accurate, and remind that it's the only country starting with O... in English, or that it's the only country ending in K... in English. Cause indeed, other countries start with O in other languages (Ouzbékistan in French, Oekraïne in Dutch, and many others) or end in K (like Irak in French, Spanish, German, Dutch, and so on).

I mean, if it was an English-speaking only quiz site why not, but being JetPunk it would be cool to acknowledge that countries are not known and defined only through their English name ;)

This specific quiz is in English though. You answer questions in the language in which the quiz is set; there are quizzes in other languages where the answers are in that specific language. Why would you expect JetPunk to accommodate other languages in this way, it's totally impractical for a start.

For the 12-time zone answer only when I tried all other "large" options. I then defaulted to the British Empire, by typing UK, then I thought Spain for the old Spanish empire, but then I thought - overseas territories? Gibraltar may or may not count, but then again - there is always FRANCE!!!

This myth about 800 languages on PNG is just stupid. Obviously they are mostly dialects. The fact that Indonesia has West Papua as well as all the other islands would obviously mean it has more.
+6
Level 61
Aug 1, 2024
Would it? Indonesia was a repressive state for a long time and tried to ensure that only Indonesian was spoken anywhere (people were famously forbidden from speaking Portuguese in East Timor, for example). Presumably they did the same thing in West Papua. Not that I actually know!

Luxembourg has 3 official languages as well.. French, German, and Luxembourgish.

There are three official languages in the country: Luxembourgish, French and German. English is very common, as is Portuguese, the mother tongue of approximately 20% of the population.

Great quiz, thank you, but i would be more precautious about Milei, you should rather write "the only country whose leader claims to be a libertarian" (or more precisely "anarcho-capitalist" since libertarian can also mean left-wing anarchist but that's still ok). I mean this because an economic libertarian who claims to liberate capitalism from the state burden can't be the leader of a... state, it's contradictory, and of course it will be impossible for him to delete the state in favor of the market like libertarianism he claims to follow intends.

I think Bahrain also counts as an island city-state, as one urban area dominates the entire country's population and a large and a large section of the island.
