To be politically correct, one should ask the question "When was America discovered by Europeans?" Clearly, it had been discovered by others well before 1492. Even then, Columbus only rediscovered it as Leif Erikson had been there almost 500 years earlier.

The US's Declaration of Independence was 1776, not 1774.
