Brilliant song, if a little fanciful, I wrote a blog featuring this song, amongst others, explaining why the lyrics don't quite add up. You can check it out...
This was one of my most misunderstood lyric songs for years. It wasn't until the advent of the internet and pages that posted lyrics for me to realize all the things i was singing wrong.
"...drums echoing into night. Cheers. Only whispers of some quiet conversation."
"I stopped a nomad along the way"
"I guess it rains down in Africa"
"Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like a leperess above the Serengeti" (so this one needs some explaining...I was CONVINCED that he was singing something like this. My first thought was some kind of female leper? That was weird...so my second thought was a female leopard (which is a leopardess) but maybe he just crammed the syllables together. I envisioned some proud female leopard sitting majestically on the prairie. So imagine my surprise when i read the ACTUAL lyrics).
For most of my lifetime I would have sworn that he was alluding to surfing and singing "I catch the waves down in Africa" or getting a tan and "catch the rays down in Africa". Probably didn't help that I spent most of the summer it was popular at a relatives beach house and I was making it a little too personal.
Nice quiz, and a classic song too

It's all written very much "tongue in cheek" or in jest, Africa is a great song really.

Apologies to WKRP in Cincinnatti - As God is my witness, I thought it was a leop'rdess that rose above the Serengeti.
