The vinculum (“overbar”) indicates the numerals below are multiplied by 1000. 4,000 is the smallest number that required a vinculum. 4,000 could not be expressed as “MMMM” because the Romans never used the same letter more than three times in a row when expressing numerical values. It is debated whether the Romans actually used the vinculum or whether its use was adopted later, as the need to express larger numbers expanded.
