The lyrics given in this quiz are the ones that have become standard, not the lyrics as introduced by Judy Garland in the 1944 film “Meet Me in St. Louis.”
would love it if this had the older lyric for the last verse, i like that one: someday soon we all will be together, if the fates allow, until then we'll have to muddle through somehow
The original lyrics introduced in the 1944 film Meet Me in St. Louis are quite different in a number of ways, not just the one you pointed out. And even those lyrics were not the ones originally written … Garland had some of them changed to make the song sound less maudlin, and the film’s producers had a reference to “the Lord” changed to “the Fates.”
It is sometimes challenging to choose among versions of lyrics for these quizzes, as the standard lyrics can change over time. In this case, I consulted three different sources to determine which lyrics to use, settling on the ones popularized by Frank Sinatra’s 1957 recording, which are still used today. (Garland even sang the “Sinatra lyrics” on her 1963-1964 Christmas special TV broadcast!)
I have added a caveat to the quiz to clarify which lyrics are being used.
