This song sold over 6 million records and made this woman the first woman to top both the country and pop chart with the same song. As a child the songwriter witnessed the mother of a classmate draw the ire of the school board for her modern ways. The woman gave a verbal tongue lashing to them which was unheard of at the time. This was the inspiration for this song. In 1978, a movie with the same title was made based on this song starring Barbara Eden.
