*First line is the band name. 1965. British band fronted by Eric Burdon This song was written by husband and wife Hall of Fame songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. This song was immensely popular with members of the military during the Vietnam War. The song is reprised in a final scene of the show Tour of Duty. Writer Craig Werner sees the song as reflecting the desire of people to take a hard look at their own lives and the community from where they come. Burdon later said, "The song became an anthem for different people – everybody at some time wants to get out of the situation they're in."
