Guess the 1960s song lyrics #265

*First line is the artist name. 1969. This song was written by Laura Nyro when she was 18. The lyrics were inspired by an affair that actor and nightclub owner Bill Carter had in the 1950s with singer Helen Merrill, the mother of Nyro's good friend Alan Merrill. A few years later it became a #1 hit for this group. The song was apropos because the two lead singers were dating, but had not yet married, and the name mentioned in the song fits.
