1961. This was the first #1 hit for a Black girl group. The group formed performing for a high school talent show in New Jersey in 1957. They had a tight, almost doo wop harmony. It was written by a very young married couple, she was only 19, who quit their day jobs to concentrate on songwriting full-time after this song hit #1. They songwriting couple eventually divorced, but the woman had extradordinary success throughout the 70s. Today their is a Broadway show about her life.
