Famous Battles of Middle-Earth

T.A. 2747; Orcs of Mount Gram, led by Golfimbul, entered the Shire, but were defeated by the Hobbits, led by Bandobras "the Bullroarer" Took, who invented the game of golf at the same time...

F.A. 510; The hidden city of Gondolin was destroyed after its location was betrayed to Morgoth by Maeglin. A handful of survivors managed to escape, including Tuor, Idril and their son Ëarendil.

S.A. 1701; The final battle of the War of the Elves and Sauron near Tharbad ended in a defeat for the Dark Lord by the Elves and the Númenoreans, forcing him to retreat to Mordor.

F.A. 60; The third battle in the Wars of Beleriand, and a resounding victory for the Elves over Morgoth.

F.A. 506 - 507; The Sons of Fëanor attacked Doriath, seeking the Silmaril taken there after the death of Beren and Lúthien. King Dior was slain, as well as Celegorm, Curufin, and Caranthir. But Dior's daughter Elwing managed to escape with the Silmaril.

F.A. 538; The surviving Sons of Fëanor attack the Havens of Sirion looking for the Silmaril in the possession of Elwing. But she cast herself into the sea with it.

S.A. 1697 - S.A. 1700; A siege of Elrond's refuge by Sauron's forces, but it was lifted by the arrival of an army of Elves from Lindon and Men of Númenor.

sometime between T.A. 1356 and 1409; During the first conflicts in the war between Angmar and Arnor, Elrond's refuge was besieged by the forces of the Witch-King of Angmar, but he was unable to take Rivendell.

Y.T. 1497, the second battle in the Wars of Beleriand and a victory for the Noldor Exiles, although Fëanor was fatally wounded and Maedhros captured by Morgoth.

T.A. 3019; There were two battles between Saruman and Rohan during the War of the Ring were Saruman ultimately succeeded in killing Prince Théodred and won passage over the river, the main entry to Rohan from the west.

S.A. 3434; A battle between the army of the Last Alliance under Gil-galad and Elendil and an army of Sauron ended in a decisive victory for the Alliance.

T.A. 2799; The final battle in the War of the Dwarves and Orcs, fought beneath the East-gate of Moria. Daín slew Azog and the Dwarves achieved a victory, but suffered great losses.

F.A. 495; The Elves of Nargothrond were defeated by the Forces of Morgoth and their king Orodreth was slain. only Túrin and a handful of survivors were able to escape. After the defeat of the Elven host, Glaurung turned towards Nargothrond and sacked the city.

T.A. 1975; The final battle in the war between Angmar and Arnor saw the defeat of the Witch-king of Angmar by the forces of Prince Ëarnur of Gondor, Círdan of Lindon and Glorfindel of Rivendell.

15 March T.A. 3019; The largest battle of the Third Age was a victory for Gondor and Rohan against the attacking forces of Mordor, led by the Witch-King. Though victory came at great cost. Many defenders lost their lives during the battle, including the steward Denethor and the king of Rohan, Théoden.

S.A. 1697; Eregion was destroyed by the armies of Sauron who obtained the Rings of Power, except the Three.

T.A. 2941; A Battle fought between the Goblins and the Wargs against Men, Elves and Dwarves on and near Erebor. The orc chieftain Bolg was slain by Beorn resulting in victory for the forces of Good. Dain Ironfoot became King under the Mountain after Thorin Oakenshield and his nephews Fili and Kili were also killed in the battle.

3 and 4 March T.A. 3019 in the valley of Helm's Deep; The attacking Isengard-host of Saruman were defeated by the Rohirrim led by Théoden, Aragorn and Erkenbrand.

F.A. 455; The fourth battle in the Wars of Beleriand. Morgoth broke the siege of Angband and scattered the sons of Fëanor.

F.A. 472; The fifth battle in the Wars of Beleriand. A decisive victory for Morgoth against the union of Maedhros. Fingon and Huor were killed and Húrin taken captive. Morgoth now had complete dominance in the north and his forces pressed southwards.

F.A. 503; Victory for the Elves of Ossiriand under Beren against a host of Dwarves which sacked Menegroth. Beren recovered the Nauglamír and presented it to Lúthien.

T.A. 2510; In the conflict between Gondor and the Wainriders/Balchoth, the Éothéod under their leader Eorl the Young unexpectedly came to the aid of Gondor and defeated the Balchoth. They were rewarded the land of Calenardhon by the steward Cirion and established the kingdom of Rohan there.

S.A. 3434 - S.A. 3441; The final conflict in the War of the Last Alliance. The seven year siege ended when Sauron finally emerged himself. He killed Gil-Galad and Elendil, but was ultimately defeated when Isildur cut the One Ring from his hand.

3 November T.A. 3019; The last military engagement of the War of the Ring, during which the Hobbits freed the Shire from the tiranny of the Ruffians and Sharkey.
