Only countries that today are republics are considered: if a nation reinstated its monarchy after abolishing it, it's ignored
Countries must have existed continuously since their monarchies and have not become republics only after regaining their independence

Cool quiz, though you gotta make Turkey yellow so people know it's counted as Europe here - no one's guessing it because it's gray!

Ireland and Iceland were in personal unions with the United Kingdom and Denmark respectively after independence. They both had their own distinct monarchies before opting for republicanism.
