Shortly before the 13th National Congress in 1987, Deng and other old revolutionaries secured the resignation of Hu Yaobang as General Secretary, however, he was permitted to stay on the Central Committee. Hu would later being re-elected to the 13th Central Committee and would stay on until his death in 1989
