Famous North Koreans

North Korea was formed as a country in 1948 after three years of Soviet rule and 35 years of being under Japanese control. This quiz does not include people such as Syngman Rhee, who were born in what would be considered North Korea, but did not actually live there after the country was formed.
*He was born in North Pyongan Province, which is part of modern day North Korea. He also lived in North Korea when it was founded in 1948 and went to the South in 1950 after being freed from a labor camp in Hungam

First leader of North Korea from 1948-1994
Kim Il-sung
Highest ranking defector of the country. He had a large role in developing the Juche concept
Hwang Jang-yop
The current leader's half brother who was assassinated in Malaysia in 2017
Kim Jong-nam
Musical group formed in 1985 that performed Korean folk songs, reunification songs, patriotic songs, and even foreign pop songs such as Brother Louie
Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble
Musical group formed under the current leader, replacing the above as the most popular musical group in the country
Moranbong Band
In 1972, he won the country's first ever gold medal at the Munich Olympics for the 50 metre rifle prone event
Ri Ho-jun
North Korean news anchor for Korean Central Television, she served as the chief presenter for the news channel from around the 1980s until she retired in 2012, although she still occasionally presents important announcements
Ri Chun-hee
The current leader's sister, who is in charge of propaganda
