This covers the period from November 9th, 1989 to March 15th, 2003. Throughout this period, Jiang Zemin was proclaimed the Paramount Leader of China, succeeding Deng. Although he was mainly seen as a transitionary figure with no actual power, by 2003, he managed to consolidate his position by removing or sidling opponents such as Qiao Shi, Chen Xitong, Yang Shangkun, or Liu Huaqing, or by promoting members of his Shanghai faction, such as Zeng Qinghong, Huang Ju, or Jia Qinglin to prominent governmental positions
