Ratites are birds in the Paleognathae infraclass. It includes the ostriches, kiwis, rheas, emu, cassowaries, tinamous, and the extinct moa and elephant birds. Most are completely flightless, except for tinamous, which have flight capabilities similar to that of a chicken! They are characterized by having only 2-3 toes on each foot, reduced keels, and lack of pygostyles. Every ratite except for tinamous has bristly, hair-like feathers all over and generally very vestigial wings.
