The source I used defines an army as a force organized and maintained by a sovereign state specifically for war and national defense. Under that definition, the swiss guard doesn’t really qualify. While they are trained and armed, today I’d say they function more like the US secret service than a national military. Since Italy handles the Vatican’s external security under the lateran treaty of 1929, their role has been limited to internal security and protection of the pope.
