15 of these rivers are not entirely in the USA, 14 are not in the US at all, and 11 are not even in the Americas. So maybe something else is to blame for your finding this quiz difficult.

looks like things have changed, because now there are 12 out of North America, and 13 out of the US, out of 20 rivers

1. Nile 2. Volga 3. Danube 4. Rhine 5. Yangtze 6. Rhone 7. Ganges 8. Rio de la Plata 9. Congo 10. Mekong 11. Niger 12. Thames 13. St Lawrence, not in the US at all. Rio Grande only curves into the US at the end. I miscounted by one.

kalbahamut, you calculate 7/20 in the US. Actually you erred because the St Lawrence forms part of the US/Canada border so it's 8/20 in the USA. Far too heavily biased towards one country, isn't it? There are some great rivers missed out such as the Amazon, Indus, Murray, Mackenzie, Yellow if only one could be a little less insular.

@CardinalSin, some of those rivers don't have enough notable cities to be included. I fully endorse the idea that we, collectively, could do better at being less insular, but it is an English language quiz. Of the major English speaking countries, the US has a high proportion of the significant rivers. Without looking, many would be hard pressed to name a single city on the Amazon, Murray, or Mackenzie.

Hard agree. There's also rivers like the Vistula, Elbe, Dnieper, Pearl, Yellow, Tigris, Indus, and Zambezi that would all be very reasonable for people to know.

Isn't the Missouri a tributary of the Mississippi? If other rivers are grouped together with their tributaries (White Nile and Nile, Hugli and Ganges) shouldn't Missouri be too? For consistency.
+2
Level 88

Don't see how any rivers are "grouped together" as main stem versus tributary - unless the quiz has been changed. Seems like the rivers were picked as being "major" rivers along which there are at least three larger cities. The Missouri certainly qualifies - especially since it's longer the the main (Mississippi) river, though only by about 20 miles. Note that the quiz also includes the Arkansas River, another tributary of the Mississippi - at over 1400 miles long, it fits the bill too.

The Rio de la Plata is basically just a bay of the Atlantic into which the Uruguay and Parana flow. I've always thought it odd that it gets named a river. Though it is a fairly significant feature, lending its name to Argentina (Plata being the Spanish for silver, Argentina being derived from the Latin for the same - argentum) and apparently being the world's largest river mouth.

Rotterdam is considered to be on the Meuse, not on the Rhine. Hard to tell the difference I agree, but still. Rotterdam is often dubbed 'de Maasstad' (the Meuse City) so.

Level 78
Jan 17, 2019
Rotterdam is an extremely interesting case as it was founded on the banks of the Maas/Meuse Delta. However over time changes have been made to the flows of the rivers and 100% of the water flow through Rotterdam is now coming from the Rhine, with the current water flow from the Maas/Meuse being further south. Quite interesting how things change and a lot of the references along that riverfront refer to Maas (Maasstad, but also Maassluis), without any water from that river passing through nowadays.

no, because actually Paranà and Uruguay rivers end where rio de la plata begins.

though it is questionable if the "rio de la plata" (despite its name) is technically a river at all.

There are two major rivers in China (Yellow, Pearl) not currently included in the quiz that would both be better choices.
