Why does the area I gave for the British Empire conflict so much with the other sources listing areas for the British Empire in 1939? That’s because I included countries with de jure independence. Canada and Australia, who contributed to roughly half of the British Empire’s area at the time (when not including de jure independent nations), were included separately. Other sources include them as part of the British Empire’s area because they were partly under British rule.
The U.S. beats Canada in terms of area because Newfoundland was independent in 1939.
