When I look at a rainbow, I see only six distinct colours - red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Both of the “purplish” swatches here look purple to me.
I believe that six was considered an unlucky number, associated with the devil and evil, so attempts were made to “see” seven colours - hence the contrived arrangements of today.
The opposing end of the purple scale from indigo would probably be violet.
