India did indeed qualify for the 1950 World Cup but withdrew AFTER the draw for the group stage. They were drawn in group 3 with Sweden, Italy and Paraguay and probably thought better of it. So Although they did not PARTICIPATE, technically they did QUALIFY
Can you imagine the first time the players from one of the tropical Caribbean islands has to go up to Greenland to play, especially if it is in the winter. Conversely, can you imagine the Greenlandic players going to Trinidad or Barbados in the summer?
I could imagine, that there is no staduim fulfilling the standards of FIFA or CONCACAF. So probably, they will play their "home games" in Canada or USA. But playing in Trinidad in July could be challenging for them, anyway
Canada deliberately schedules matches in Edmonton for the cold weather advantage. If Greenland needs a place to be at "home", Edmonton is the perfect place.
Formally applied to join in May 2024, application was rejected in June 2025 with out explanation.
But seeing as meetings to discuss the pathway to membership had to be postponed due to a certain president expressing a desire to take over Greenland I think we can guess their reasons.
I think there's a bit of a mix up between FIFA members and Continental (eg. CAF, CONCACAF) members. French Guiana shouldn't be included because it's not a FIFA member and can't qualify for the world cup, however it's a member of CONCACAF and can compete in their competitions. In the same sense Bonaire, Guadeloupe, St Martin, Sint Maarten; Martinique, Zanzibar and Reunion (which are now only an Associate Member of CAF), Northern Mariana Islands, Kiribati, Tuvalu, and Niue (which is no longer part of OFC or FIFA) should not be included either.
I am just curious, why is Zanzibar included in this quiz? According to their wikipedia page they were never a member of FIFA and only a member of CAF for a few months in 2017.
I just noticed I was spelling French Guiana wrong this whole time and took about 5 minutes to find out which South American country was the missing one out. I decided to just move on. facepalm.
qatar should be included imo, as they technically never qualified for a world cup. they participated in the 2022 world cup as a host country, not by succesfully qualifying through the torturous AFC qualifiers.
You’re right, but it does also state “current members of FIFA” at the top - this was just to avoid needless confusion surrounding countries that have been broken up/reformed, etc
missed 12, don't know anything about soccer/football but I do not think that that is a big requirement for this quiz. Of those, 3 were countries (maledives and grenada, which I often miss and belarus) of the others there were another 2 I could have got (hong kong and gibraltar). Those other 7 I was not likely to get.
See Cyprus is in Europe. They even get to participate in Eurovision :)
Seems weird that Guam associates with Asia and not Oceania, but geography is only mildly suggested for football associations. I've always wondered why Australia is in AFC and not OFC. I've always assumed it was bevcuase it was a much more straightforward qualifying path to WC. Can someone more versed in this confirm? If qualifying was major reason any chance they switch back with the OFC path guaranteed?
IIRC Australia said they wanted tougher competition. But prolly having no guaranteed place, having to play playoffs (which they lost several times), and money (bigger TV deals) played a role. Plus OFC qualifying used to be a joint comp with AFC.
I would add that, although not strictly necessary, I feel a clarification that this does not include the Women's World Cup would be helpful. Awesome quiz!
But qualify they did,
Thanks for playing!
