Caveats and explanations

1. If you're going to comment that Northern Ireland's flag should be the United Kingdom flag, please know that you are wrong on two counts:

i) The Ulster Banner is commonly used to represent Northern Ireland in sport;

ii) The Ulster Banner was used as the governmental and common flag of Northern Ireland from 1953 until 1973, and the time of Northern Ireland's first FIFA World Cup appearance falls within these years.

2. There is a difference between countries that were renamed and countries that formed following the breakup of a federation.

For example, had DR Congo qualified for a FIFA World Cup under their present name, they would still only appear once on this quiz, as Zaire. That is because it is not a new country, just one that changed its name.

Conversely, Russia is not the explicit successor of the Soviet Union, nor FR Yugoslavia (later Serbia and Montenegro) of (SFR) Yugoslavia, nor Serbia of Serbia and Montenegro, nor Czech Republic to Czechoslovakia. They were formed as new countries, and are represented as such in this quiz. This is irrespective of what FIFA recognises.

As a broad footballing comparison, when Newton Heath changed its name to Manchester United, it was still the same club. When Wimbledon FC was relocated to Milton Keynes, MK Dons was founded as a new club (despite assuming the assets and league position of Wimbledon).

3. Germany and West Germany are, ostensibly, the same entity. They are, therefore, listed singularly, whilst East Germany is separate.

4. No I haven't made a mistake - the Dutch flag really does feature twice!

It was also the flag of the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia).
